Britain is prepared to assist its allies in intercepting Russian shadow vessels that are providing financial support to Vladimir Putin’s military operations, according to the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper has pledged to crack down on Russia’s clandestine fleet, which consists of deteriorating oil tankers operating under false identities to evade Western sanctions. The UK is pushing for more decisive measures against these covert ships, which are channeling funds to the Kremlin for the conflict in Ukraine and disrupting vital undersea cables.
British forces recently collaborated with the US in a high-stakes operation to seize a tanker linked to Russia accused of violating oil sanctions in Venezuela. While British personnel have not yet boarded these vessels, authorities are reportedly assessing the legal framework for potential military intervention.
During a visit to Helsinki, Ms. Cooper toured a patrol vessel and met with Finnish Border Guard officials responsible for safeguarding the country’s extensive border against Russian threats. The patrol ship was involved in a raid on a Russia-linked vessel allegedly involved in damaging undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland.
Ms. Cooper emphasized the need for stronger actions against the shadow fleet, citing the vessels’ detrimental impact on sanctions, the war in Ukraine, environmental concerns, and national security risks, including threats to undersea infrastructure. She expressed readiness for enforcement operations, highlighting the importance of international collaboration to exert pressure on the shadow fleet.
The Foreign Secretary also advocated for a complete ban on the shipment of Russian oil to cut off a crucial funding source for Moscow. The UK is closely monitoring enforcement activities by European partners against illicit vessels, particularly in the Baltic Sea and off the coast of France.
Ms. Cooper observed a simulation of how Finnish Border Guards conduct vessel seizures, witnessing a demonstration involving armed personnel rappelling from a helicopter to board a ship. The recent raid on the Fitburg vessel, along with the crew’s arrest, is seen as a strong deterrent, with Finland having the authority to use military force against rogue ships when necessary.
The UK has noted an escalation in Russian vessel activities near its waters, prompting Defense Secretary John Healey to issue warnings following incidents like the Yantar, a Russian spy ship, using lasers against RAF pilots outside UK territory. Ms. Cooper stressed the resolve to clamp down on the Russian shadow fleet and disrupt Putin’s operations threatening national security in UK waters.
In addition to her discussions with Finnish officials, the Foreign Secretary also engaged with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, commencing a visit to the Arctic Circle region. The focus on security in the High North has heightened amid concerns raised by Donald Trump regarding Greenland’s status and potential strategic implications involving Russia and China.
