“New York State Declares Emergency Ahead of ‘Catastrophic’ Winter Storm”

New York State has announced a state of emergency in anticipation of an approaching severe winter storm labeled as “catastrophic.” Governor Kathy Hochul declared the emergency state during a press conference, highlighting the state’s readiness with ample salt supplies for road treatment and granting permission for all state employees to work remotely on Monday.

A total of 14 states have already declared emergencies in preparation for heavy snow, ice, and freezing rain. This weather phenomenon is the result of a convergence between a low-pressure system in the Southwest region and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, meeting frigid Arctic air from Canada.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that the storm originating in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains will first impact southern and midwestern states before progressing towards the east coast. The storm is expected to reach as far north as Maine by Sunday, causing widespread heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain from the Southern Rockies to New England, covering areas from Texas to Washington DC, New York, and Boston.

Approximately 160 million individuals, nearly half the population of the US across 30 states, are likely to experience snow and ice, with some regions expecting over 12 inches of accumulation by the weekend’s end. Among the states that have declared emergencies are Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

The winter storm is a combination of heavy snow, blowing snow, and dangerous wind chills, as stated by the NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory. The NWS cautioned that the storm could lead to substantial ice accumulations, resulting in prolonged power outages, severe tree damage, and hazardous travel conditions.

US President Donald Trump, known for his skepticism towards climate change, took to Truth Social to comment on the upcoming cold wave affecting 40 states. Meteorologists attribute the cold wave to the Polar Vortex, a vast area of low pressure and cold air surrounding the poles, pushing Arctic air across North America. Scientific evidence suggests that Arctic warming can disrupt the polar vortex, potentially leading to extreme winter weather events.
