A new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, is gaining popularity at Argos as a Sky Q-style upgrade option without the need for monthly fees. This device offers similar features to Sky’s premium service, such as recording programs, pausing live TV, and storing content on its internal hard drive.
Unlike Sky Q, the Manhattan S4-R provides access to over 100 channels without any monthly payments after the initial purchase. It operates through Freesat, utilizing an existing satellite dish to deliver free TV channels directly to your TV, including BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, Legend, Sky Mix, TLC, U&Dave, and That’s TV 2.
The Manhattan S4-R is designed with a user-friendly interface, built-in search capabilities, and access to over 60,000 hours of on-demand entertainment. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5. While it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat provides free viewing options.
The Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently priced at £219.99 and is available at retailers like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions expected to launch soon. Demand for the device is high, as indicated by Argos listing it as “in demand” and “selling fast.”
Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, highlighted that the S4-R enhances recording capabilities by allowing up to four simultaneous recordings, making it an attractive choice for households seeking an affordable alternative to subscription TV services.
In a similar move, the Pleio puck has entered the market to challenge traditional TV providers by offering streaming access to TVs without the need for an aerial. This device provides over 50 live channels over the internet.
After addressing initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is back on sale through retailers like Amazon and eBay, priced at £99.99 and including a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games.
Sky has also announced a 20% price reduction for the Sky Glass Air TV ahead of the upcoming World Cup, with prices starting at £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, can expect to pay from £11 per month.
