A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained on three charges related to armed robbery. Tarrant, who is currently serving a 12-month ban from racing due to a prior offense, was denied bail during a court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia.
The charges against Tarrant include three counts of armed robbery, unlawfully entering premises with the intent to commit a serious offense, and possession of dangerous drugs, as reported by Racenet.com. The crime of robbery carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, which can be heightened to a life term in cases involving armed robbery, collaboration with others, or the use of personal violence.
Scheduled to reappear in court on March 19, Tarrant, aged 31 and with a track record of 502 wins, including three Group race victories, last participated in a race in August. His notable achievement was winning the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2015.
In 2020, Tarrant was suspended for six months after confessing to assaulting a fellow jockey in the weighing room. Additionally, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for a year for declining to provide testimony during a stewards’ investigation into alleged falsification of health assessment documents for licensing purposes.
The matter was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, which directed Tarrant to enter a plea. However, after four weeks passed with no response from Tarrant, the Commission panel stated that his behavior undermines the integrity of the regulatory framework crucial for participant well-being and public trust in wagering activities.
The panel emphasized the obligation of licensed individuals to cooperate with inquiries instead of selecting which evidence to present. Consequently, they ruled that a 12-month disqualification starting from October 8, 2025, and concluding on October 8, 2026, was justified.
