A visitor captured a terrifying moment when a shark bit her leg while she was snorkeling in the ocean, attempting to pull her underwater. Tayane Dalazen experienced this frightening incident while snorkeling with friends in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. The serene atmosphere she was enjoying suddenly turned chaotic as a nurse shark approached and latched onto her right leg.
Disturbing footage taken by the tourist shows the shark’s leisurely approach towards Ms. Dalazen before swiftly clamping down on her leg, leading to her hospitalization. The video captures Ms. Dalazen gracefully swimming amidst the marine life, with the shark slowly moving in the background. The shark, initially appearing as if it would pass by, suddenly turns towards the swimmer and bites.
The situation quickly escalates as Ms. Dalazen struggles against the shark, known for its feeding habits on shelled prey rather than large sea creatures like Great Whites. Despite their two-meter length and strong jaws, nurse sharks primarily feed on crustaceans and mollusks, using their teeth to crush their prey.
The shark’s unique feeding mechanism left Ms. Dalazen with a significant bite mark on her leg. Thankfully, her injuries were minor as her tour guide intervened to free her from the shark’s grip. Following the incident, Ms. Dalazen shared images of the shark’s bite marks on her leg, joking that the shark may be missing a tooth. The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation initiated an investigation into the incident.
Although rare, nurse shark attacks occasionally occur in tourist areas due to irregular feeding patterns, as highlighted by local authorities. Ms. Dalazen’s ordeal serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of marine encounters, even in popular diving spots.
