Young survivors of the tragic New Year fire in Switzerland delivered heartfelt speeches today during an official memorial event, leading to French president Emmanuel Macron being visibly moved.
Marie Albrecht, Aline Morisoli, and Solal Heimendinger, who were all witnesses to the calamity, shared their experiences on stage at the ceremony, attended by about 1,000 individuals, including families of the deceased, emergency personnel, and dignitaries. The event took place at the “Le Régent” convention center in Martigny, Switzerland.
This commemoration was part of a nationwide day of mourning in Switzerland, occurring nine days after a devastating fire at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana claimed the lives of 40 people, including 20 children, and left 116 others injured. Among the victims were teenagers as young as 14 and two siblings.
Marie Albrecht expressed, “Speaking here today fills us with deep emotion. What started as a simple visit to the bar that evening turned into a nightmarish ordeal. The horrifying scenes we witnessed were unbearable.
“The situation outside was beyond nightmarish. The sound of piercing screams filled the frigid air, and the smell of burning was overwhelming.”
Aline Morisoli remarked, “We are part of a generation that faces challenges in a world that is often unjust and fragile. Despite this, we persevere. We stand up for our beliefs.
“There is much to be repaired, much to be achieved – we envision a better world. Witness the determination of the youth. We are proud of your resilience. Keep fighting.”
“Every individual who fights contributes, whether their efforts are visible or not. Every action matters. Do not succumb to defeat. Embrace life. While we cannot add days to life, we can certainly add more life to each day.”
Survivor Solal Heimendinger expressed gratitude towards the emergency responders and medical staff, acknowledging the approximately 40 firefighters and other rescue personnel who received a moving round of applause during the ceremony. Despite snowy conditions, hundreds gathered outside at Place du Scandia in Crans-Montana to watch a live broadcast of the event. A moment of silence was observed nationwide to honor the victims, accompanied by five minutes of church bells tolling across Switzerland.
During his address at the service, Valais State Council President Mathias Reynard conveyed his emotions to the attendees. He said, “Dear families, dear loved ones, a day that began with joy and camaraderie turned into a nightmare. Forty lives were lost, and 116 individuals were harmed, some severely.
“Today, we stand together to honor the memories of the 40 departed souls. We pledge never to forget them. Silence is not enough; words must now be spoken. We stand in solidarity with you – mothers, fathers, siblings, and friends.”
