“Waitrose Launches Subscription Service for Home Grocery Delivery”

Waitrose has introduced a new subscription service tailored for dedicated supermarket customers who frequently order groceries for home delivery. The service offers a one-month pass for £8, a six-month pass for £45, and an annual pass for £85. Customers without a pass can expect to pay between £2 and £4 for a single delivery slot.

Waitrose projects that the annual pass could yield savings of up to £123 for customers who currently pay £4 weekly for a delivery slot. Additionally, pass holders will enjoy early access to Christmas delivery slots opening in September.

Laura Burbedge, Waitrose’s online director, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing its online services to provide customers with enhanced value and a top-notch experience. Following a successful trial period with numerous customers signing up for Delivery Passes, Waitrose anticipates high demand nationwide upon the service’s full launch.

In contrast, Tesco offers a six-month anytime delivery pass at £7.99 per month (£47.94 total) with same-day delivery included, or £6.99 per month (£83.88 total) for a 12-month subscription. Their off-peak pass, valid for deliveries after 3 pm, costs £4.99 for six months (£29.94 total) or £3.99 for 12 months (£47.88 total). For click and collect services, a six-month package is priced at £2.49 per month.

Sainsbury’s charges £7.50 monthly for an anytime delivery pass, with a six-month subscription priced at £43 and a 12-month subscription at £80. A midweek pass is available at £4 per month or £40 for a year.

Recently, Waitrose reintroduced complimentary tea and coffee for loyalty cardholders, regardless of purchase. The supermarket also initiated a trial allowing customers to borrow reusable cups for their free coffee, intending to reduce plastic waste. Customers are required to return the cup within a week to a designated drop-off point or face a £3 fee, with participation facilitated by scanning their MyWaitrose card.

Waitrose informed customers via email about the scheme, emphasizing the opportunity to enjoy a free hot drink without a prior store purchase and reminding them to bring their reusable cup. A Waitrose spokesperson stated that a reusable cup trial is ongoing in nine branches, catering to MyWaitrose members for free coffee redemption and cafe patrons for purchase.
