The Government’s decision to prohibit trail hunting has ignited strong reactions from the Tories and Reform UK. Campaigners have persistently highlighted the brutal outcomes for foxes in hunts involving dogs, with senior police officials emphasizing the misuse of trail hunting as a cover for illegal fox hunting. The impending ban, expected to be enacted in this parliamentary session, is part of the comprehensive animal welfare strategy scheduled for release on Monday.
Trail hunting involves following a scent trail instead of pursuing real animals and was introduced as an alternative to fox hunting, which was outlawed by the Labour Party in 2004. The animal welfare strategy, unveiled recently, also encompasses outlawing snare traps and implementing a closed hunting season for hares.
Critics, including Nigel Farage and the Conservatives, have strongly criticized the ban on trail hunting, with accusations of authoritarianism and attacks on rural traditions. However, Downing Street has refuted these claims, asserting that the Government is fulfilling its manifesto commitments.
The Labour-led Animal Welfare Strategy, which includes the trail hunting ban, has been lauded by advocates, though concerns have been raised about the absence of specific timelines for implementation. Additionally, the strategy unveiled this week aims to combat puppy smuggling and prohibit electric shock collars for pets.
Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds emphasized the UK’s commitment to animal welfare, declaring the Government’s dedication to implementing a groundbreaking animal welfare strategy. The strategy aims to enhance welfare standards for animals across various settings, from homes to farms and the wild.
Director of advocacy and prevention at the RSPCA, Thomas Schultz-Jagow, praised the Government’s new animal welfare strategy as a significant progression that could positively impact millions of animals. He stressed the importance of eliminating cruel practices and expressed eagerness to collaborate with the Government to ensure all animals receive the protection they deserve.
