The leader of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has emphasized the need for the UK to strengthen its relationship with Europe, citing concerns over the reliability of Donald Trump as a partner. Paul Nowak, the TUC head, highlighted a shift in attitudes among both Leavers and Remainers towards resolving issues stemming from the problematic Brexit deal. Nowak proposed considering a UK-EU customs union to facilitate tariff-free trade while ensuring adherence to common standards for traded goods.
This call for closer ties with Europe follows a statement by Wes Streeting, diverging from Keir Starmer, in support of a customs union agreement with the EU. Nowak stressed the importance of prioritizing a strong working relationship with the EU, particularly given the uncertainties surrounding Trump’s policies. He emphasized the economic benefits and the necessity for frictionless trade with European partners, especially in industries like automotive, aerospace, and chemicals.
The TUC General Secretary underscored that the focus should be on practical solutions that benefit the working population, rather than political ideologies. He pointed out the tangible impact of Brexit on everyday consumers, reflected in the rising costs of essential goods. Nowak dismissed lingering Brexit divisions and urged a pragmatic approach towards securing a favorable trading arrangement with the EU for the benefit of the country’s workforce.
Highlighting the economic, political, and national security implications, Nowak reiterated the importance of aligning closely with Europe, given the unreliability of Trump as a partner. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts with the EU on economic matters, as well as issues concerning Ukraine and other shared concerns.
