“Swiss Bar Owner Apprehended in Fatal Fire Investigation”

The Swiss bar owner linked to a fatal fire on New Year’s Eve has been apprehended and labeled as a potential flight risk by authorities. Jacques Moretti, 49, and his wife Jessica are now under investigation for criminal manslaughter after a tragic incident at Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland during New Year’s celebrations in 2026. The devastating fire, reportedly ignited by sparklers placed in champagne bottles, resulted in the loss of 40 lives and left 119 individuals with severe burns. The Morettis are facing charges of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence.

The bar’s manager, known for past criminal convictions, had a history of legal troubles, including involvement in pimping activities. Mr. Moretti was previously convicted of facilitating prostitution and had been incarcerated in connection with sex worker-related cases. Reports indicate a pattern of criminal behavior, including charges of kidnapping and confinement.

In an ongoing investigation, prosecutors are examining the circumstances surrounding the deadly fire, which experts suggest may have been triggered by flammable materials in the bar’s basement. The authorities have acknowledged a lack of fire safety inspections at the establishment since 2019, raising questions about responsibility for the tragic incident. The couple also owns other businesses, including a burger bar and a Corsican-themed restaurant.

Despite denying any wrongdoing, the Morettis have been subjected to legal restrictions, with Jessica required to regularly check in with law enforcement and wear an electronic monitoring device. In a public statement, Mr. Moretti expressed deep distress over the tragedy and emphasized compliance with regulations. The investigation into the fire’s causes and the parties involved is still ongoing.
