“Social Media Spat Mars Darts Match at World Championship”

Joe Cullen has taken to social media to criticize Mensur Suljovic, accusing the experienced darts player of being dishonest. The player from Bradford faced a tough loss against the Austrian in a tense second-round match at the World Darts Championship.

Suljovic mounted an impressive comeback after trailing in a set, ultimately claiming a 3-1 victory over Cullen at Alexandra Palace. Throughout the game, Cullen was visibly annoyed, checking his watch sarcastically and muttering ‘hurry up’ to himself while the 53-year-old opponent took his time preparing to throw.

Although Suljovic is known for his deliberate pace compared to other players, Cullen, also known as ‘the Rockstar,’ grew increasingly frustrated with his opponent’s slow play and prolonged celebrations. The tension escalated during their post-match handshake, with Cullen engaging in a brief verbal exchange with Suljovic, who responded with laughter.

Upon exiting the stage, Cullen halted abruptly, turned back, and glared coldly at Suljovic as the Austrian basked in the crowd’s applause. Cullen didn’t hold back on social media, expressing his anger towards the situation.

In a post, Cullen stated, “If that’s how darts is played, count me out! I’ve always respected Mensur off the board, but this behavior was evident to all! I believe many share my sentiment. Some may argue it’s part of the game, but no matter how you phrase it – it’s deceptive! That’s not what darts should be.”

When questioned about Cullen’s outburst and whether he apologized for his slow pace during a press conference after the match, Suljovic appeared puzzled. He responded, “I have never personally apologized to Joe Cullen. I perform on that stage, so what’s his issue?”

“I might apologize to the referee, maybe, but to Joe Cullen? Never. ‘You play your way, I play mine,’ everyone has their own style.”

“I might take about 40 seconds before my first throw. Some players (gestures throwing motion) and I’m almost hit in the head by a dart. This isn’t acceptable.”

When further probed about the incident, Suljovic said, “I don’t understand his grievance. What’s the problem? I gave him chances with missed doubles and everything?”

“I always play darts correctly. Maybe my celebrations are too much. I like Joe Cullen. He’s a good guy, but…”

In the upcoming round, Suljovic could face defending world champion Luke Littler. The 18-year-old is set to compete against darts player and NHS area manager David Davies in his next match.
