Snooker Pros Push for Miss Rule Reform

Several prominent snooker players, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have shared their views on a rule they believe should be changed within the sport. In discussions with TNT Sports, top professionals highlighted a common desire for adjustments in snooker regulations.

Seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, alongside other players, has advocated for a reevaluation of the ‘miss’ rule, which has been a contentious issue among elite players. The current rule penalizes players who fail to make a desired contact with the ball, leading to a foul and a miss being called by the referee.

The ‘miss’ rule is typically invoked when a player attempts a challenging shot instead of an easier escape route from a snooker, or when there is a perceived lack of effort demonstrated by undershooting and missing a ball. This rule can result in the opponent choosing to reset the balls for a retake or leaving them in their current positions on the table.

Moreover, the ‘three-miss rule’ dictates that a player conceding three consecutive misses automatically forfeits the frame to their opponent. This regulation has sparked debates due to its potential inconsistencies in enforcement, the potential to prolong games, and the confusion it may cause to casual viewers.

When asked about potential changes to the game, O’Sullivan and Wilson both emphasized the need to address the miss rule, suggesting a cap on the number of allowable misses. Selby proposed limiting misses to prevent situations where repeated fouls could lead to an undeserved victory for a player.

Former world champion Murphy raised concerns about the manipulative nature of the miss rule, highlighting how it allows for deliberate fouls that can impact the game’s integrity. Additionally, Neil Robertson recommended a reform where failing to make direct contact with a red ball would result in the opponent receiving a free ball, potentially expediting gameplay.

Beyond the miss rule discussions, snooker players also scrutinized the traditional dress code requirements in the sport. Many players believe that the mandatory long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear should be relaxed to adapt to modern preferences and enhance player comfort.

Mark Allen emphasized the need for a more relaxed dress code, while Luca Brecel identified the dress code, shot clock regulations, and mandatory cushion hits as key areas for potential improvement in the sport.
