“Robin Elt Shoes to Close Historic Worcester Store After 153 Years”

One of the UK’s long-standing shoe retailers is set to close a high street store in Worcester after serving customers for 153 years. Robin Elt Shoes, established in 1872, will permanently shut its doors on January 10, 2026. Despite this closure, the company will maintain its presence in other locations including Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes.

Jenny Elt, the managing director, expressed deep sadness over the closure of the family-owned business, attributing it to the store’s lack of financial sustainability for the future. She emphasized the challenges faced by the business, stating, “It’s very difficult for myself, being the family business, it’s very sad to have to come to this decision. The shop is no longer viable as a store that can continue into the future, unfortunately. We can’t pick money out of thin air.”

In response to the closure, a spokesperson from Worcester City Council acknowledged the trend of increasing online shopping and the shift towards town centers focusing more on leisure and entertainment activities. The Council, in collaboration with Worcestershire County Council, Worcester BID, and other stakeholders, has undertaken significant efforts to support city center traders by enhancing the shopping experience and promoting a blend of well-known high street brands and unique independent retailers.

Meanwhile, charity shop chain Scope recently closed three more high street branches in Morden, Torquay, and Washington as part of its plan to shut 77 shops this year due to anticipated financial losses. Scope had initiated closures following a projected £1.5 million deficit, potentially affecting around 200 retail staff and 2,000 volunteers. Debbie Boylen, Scope’s head of retail, expressed regret over the closures, noting the impact on the charity’s ability to generate crucial income to aid disabled individuals and their families.

The evolving retail landscape and economic challenges faced by both traditional and charitable organizations underscore the ongoing transformations in consumer behavior and market dynamics.
