Fleeing war-torn Ukraine, Olha now sings in honor of her cousin who tragically lost his life in combat. As a member of Songs for Ukraine, Olha’s performance of Carol of the Bells at Westminster Abbey was nothing short of dazzling.
Olha, a proud mother of one, revealed that she dedicates her performances to her cousin, Bohdan Izmailov, who perished at the age of 22 while serving in Ukraine’s Air Assault Brigade in 2023. Reflecting on her poignant solo during the King’s broadcast, Olha expressed how she carries her cousin’s memory with her every time she undertakes a significant project, stating, “I’m doing that for him, in his memory, all the time.”
Describing Bohdan as a kind-hearted and selfless individual, Olha shared that her cousin, who hailed from Mykolaiv, had a deep sense of duty towards the military. She fondly recalled their close bond from childhood, emphasizing how Bohdan’s generous nature and friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on those around him.
Currently residing in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, alongside her 10-year-old son, brother, and mother, Olha and her family sought refuge in the UK through the Homes for Ukraine initiative in 2022. Joining the Songs for Ukraine choir upon her arrival, Olha continues to use her voice to honor her cousin’s legacy and raise awareness about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The choir’s show-stopping performance of a new rendition of Carol of the Bells, composed by Mykola Leontovych, marked the conclusion of the King’s Christmas broadcast, showcasing the resilience and talent of its members. Arina Koroletska, another member of the choir, shared her awe at being part of the King’s Christmas broadcast performance, describing it as an unforgettable moment. Hailing from Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, Arina relocated to the UK with her family in mid-2022, joining the choir as a means of finding solace and healing through music amidst the turmoil of war.
Established in response to Russia’s invasion in 2022, the Songs for Ukraine choir serves as a sanctuary for its diverse members, offering a space to find comfort and unity through the power of music. Co-manager Katya Kuznetsova highlighted the healing nature of the choir, providing a respite for individuals to come together, sing, and momentarily escape the harsh realities of conflict.
