“Record High Water Quality Enables Thousands to Enjoy Boxing Day Swims”

Thousands of people are set to enjoy Boxing Day swims today following significant improvements in water quality across the nation. The Government’s commitment to cleaning up water sources has resulted in 93% of bathing sites meeting swimming standards, showcasing a notable enhancement from the previous year.

Recent measures introduced by ministers include the implementation of the strictest enforcement powers in ten years. Water executives now face criminal liability for concealing illegal sewage discharges and can have unfair bonuses revoked. More than £4 million in bonuses have been prohibited across six water companies this year. Additionally, investments by water companies are now safeguarded to ensure that funds are directed towards fixing infrastructure, reducing sewage spills, and enhancing water quality rather than being allocated to dividends or bonuses.

The Environment Agency has been granted enhanced authority to recover enforcement expenses from polluters, ramp up inspections, and impose penalties promptly without the need for protracted investigations.

Water Minister Emma Hardy emphasized the significance of Boxing Day swims as a reflection of the public’s appreciation for natural water bodies. She highlighted the government’s recent actions to fortify water protection, emphasizing the increase in bathing water quality, bonus restrictions, and substantial investments in waterway clean-up efforts.

Looking ahead, the government plans to unveil comprehensive strategies next year for the most extensive overhaul of the water industry since privatization. Notably, a record number of criminal inquiries have been initiated into water companies post-general election, with 81 allegations of illegal sewage discharges and other transgressions under investigation.

Despite these advancements, Giles Bristow, CEO of Surfers Against Sewage, expressed concerns about the ongoing “sewage scandal,” urging for tangible, enforceable changes by 2026 to rectify the flawed system. He demanded government intervention to address the sewage issue decisively, emphasizing the importance of maintaining clean water spaces consistently beyond the holiday season.
