Peterborough, a city in Cambridgeshire, has been ranked among the 20 least happy places to live in the UK, according to data from Rightmove. Out of 220 locations, Peterborough landed at the 213th spot. Having moved from Gloucestershire to Peterborough four years ago, I was unfamiliar with the city and its reputation as one of the ‘worst places to live in the UK.’ Despite its initial negative perception, my experience revealed that Peterborough had more to offer than expected, though locals often express mixed feelings about their city.
Residents commonly share their ambivalence towards Peterborough when asked about their satisfaction with living there. Many acknowledge the lack of activities and describe it as unexciting, yet they express a strong attachment to the city as their home.
Known primarily as a commuter town, Peterborough benefits from its efficient rail connections to London and Edinburgh, as well as its proximity to major airports and nearby cities such as Cambridge. While the city boasts a decent-sized center and a popular shopping mall, independent stores are scarce, and dining options mostly consist of chain restaurants alongside a few hidden culinary treasures.
Despite the closure of beloved establishments in recent years, Peterborough offers entertainment options like a deluxe cinema, an expansive ice rink, and a stunning Cathedral that hosts various events. The local Nene Park and its surrounding lakes provide opportunities for outdoor activities, contributing to the city’s practical appeal for residents.
Although Peterborough may not be the most aesthetically pleasing or vibrant place, its residents maintain a sense of loyalty towards the city, even while acknowledging its shortcomings. While the city may not offer everything, its practical amenities and convenient access to essential services make it a functional and comfortable place to live for many.
In essence, Peterborough may not be perfect, but its residents embrace its imperfections and make the most of what the city has to offer, occasionally seeking adventure in nearby towns for a change of scenery.
