“New TV Service Freely Challenges Sky Q Dominance”

Sky Q, a long-standing favorite among UK residents for over a decade, has maintained its popularity as a top TV device, renowned for its extensive content recording capabilities. However, a potential competitor is on the horizon, offering similar features without requiring any subscription fees.

Known as Freely, this emerging service comes integrated into new television sets, enabling users to access live and on-demand content without the need for a traditional aerial setup. The content is delivered directly to the screen via the internet, eliminating the need for additional hardware.

Initially accessible only through the purchase of a new TV, the landscape is set to change with the imminent release of a dedicated set-top box by the creators of Freely and Freeview. Recently, a sighting of one of these Freely devices, manufactured by Humax, has surfaced online, presenting users with the opportunity to enjoy free TV access and recording capabilities akin to Sky Q, with added support for 4K resolution for enhanced viewing experiences.

While the price point for the Freely box may start at just under £250, making it a somewhat costly investment, users can enjoy all Freely content without any additional subscription charges once the device is set up. Although an exact launch date for the new Freely boxes remains undisclosed, they are expected to hit store shelves soon.

Notably, an online listing of the Freely box has been removed, suggesting a potential premature reveal. Updates on any developments will be shared promptly as they unfold.

Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, expressed the vision behind Freely, emphasizing its mission to bring free TV to a broader audience. While Freely offers features similar to Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and Sky Q, it does not provide access to premium sports, movies, or box sets from channels like Sky Atlantic or Sky Max, nor does it support services such as Netflix within the platform.

For access to premium content, users may consider subscribing to one of Sky’s plans, starting as low as £15 per month and often including access to Netflix.
