“Nescafé’s Frothy Coffee Factory Sustains Local Farm Partnership”

Nescafé’s popular frothy coffee drinks, like cappuccinos and caramel lattes, are produced in Cumbria, near Carlisle, at Nestlé’s factory in the village of Dalston. Established in 1962, the factory initially focused on making powdered and condensed milk. However, in 1992, production expanded to include cappuccino mixes, and by 2018, a wide variety of Nescafé frothy coffees and Coffee Mate were being manufactured.

Interestingly, the milk used in these beverages is sourced locally from Dolphenby Farm, located just 20 miles away. Jonny Slack, a 36-year-old co-manager at Dolphenby along with his colleague Robert Craig, highlighted Nestlé’s role as a global company that also supports local employment.

Jonny’s journey at Dolphenby began at 16 as a cowman, eventually becoming a stakeholder in the farm. He now resides on the farm with his family, emphasizing the idyllic setting for his daughter’s upbringing, surrounded by farm animals and nature.

Dolphenby operates under First Milk, a British farmer-owned dairy co-operative that holds a B Corp certification, signifying its adherence to high standards of performance, accountability, and transparency. This certification underscores First Milk’s dedication to sustainability and responsible business practices.

At Dolphenby, a regenerative farming approach is prioritized, focusing on soil health and biodiversity while reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers. The farm benefits from the mutually beneficial relationship between First Milk and Nestlé, which has been supporting Dolphenby for over two decades, facilitating positive changes towards regenerative practices.

Robert, with a farming lineage spanning generations, emphasizes the evolution of farming practices and expansion over the years. The collaboration between First Milk and Nestlé not only enhances the farm’s sustainability efforts but also ensures the well-being of employees and supply chain partners.
