Milton Keynes, the soon-to-be city, is home to the UK’s largest indoor Christmas grotto. Despite mixed reviews, the city surprises visitors with its lush green spaces and waterways, defying its initial impression of a concrete jungle in Central Milton Keynes.
The Christmas grotto at centre:MK, once Europe’s longest undercover mall, may seem out of place, but locals find it enchanting. Families, like mine, consider a visit to the grotto a must-do tradition, with my kids enjoying the festive parade and meeting Santa’s elves on stilts.
Transforming into ‘Starlight Square’ during the holiday season, Middleton Hall offers free festive attractions until January. Visitors can marvel at various light displays, stroll through a giant mushroom, enjoy a water fountain with singing reindeer, and be mesmerized by countless Christmas trees.
The holiday festivities include rides like a charming train tour, a Victorian-style carousel, and a VR sleigh ride for family fun. Our family had an unforgettable day exploring the lights, with my Christmas-loving toddler enjoying the train ride and looking forward to the helter skelter in the future.
The highlight of the experience was Santa’s Grotto, where lively elves welcomed us, leading to a magical adventure crafting gingerbread cookies with characters from Peter Rabbit’s tales. Meeting Santa in his cozy chamber was the climax of the visit, bringing joy to all, especially my bashful son.
While some activities come at a cost, such as the virtual sleigh ride and meeting Santa, the festive spirit and the joy on children’s faces make the experience priceless. As a regular attendee since 2018, the sparkle in my son’s eyes tells the story better than any critique could.
