“Microsoft Windows 10 Support Ending: Urgent Action Needed”

With Microsoft set to end free support for Windows 10 in just a week, users of Windows-based PCs are advised to take action promptly. The transition to Windows 11 or enrollment in Extended Security Updates is recommended to safeguard devices from potential vulnerabilities and cyber threats post the October 14 deadline.

Research from Which? reveals that an estimated 21 million individuals in the UK may still be utilizing Windows 10 on their laptops or computers, posing a significant security concern as Microsoft discontinues support. Alarmingly, a quarter of current Windows 10 users (26%) plan to continue using the outdated system despite the risks associated with the lack of security updates and patches.

To address this imminent security issue, Which? emphasizes the importance of immediate action to mitigate potential risks of cyber attacks and data breaches. Users are urged to verify their operating system version and consider upgrading to Windows 11 if compatible. Alternatively, opting for the one-year Windows 10 extension through the Extended Security Updates program is advised for a temporary solution while exploring long-term alternatives such as transitioning to a new operating system or acquiring a device running Windows 11.

It is crucial to note that the one-year extension under the ESU program requires user enrollment and can be obtained for free by backing up Windows settings to OneDrive, using Microsoft loyalty points, or paying a one-time fee. For those opting to upgrade to a new PC or laptop, proper disposal or recycling of the old device is recommended to ensure data security and environmental responsibility.
