“Landfill Collapse in Philippines: Dozens Feared Buried”

A collapse at a landfill site in central Philippines has led to fears that numerous individuals may have been buried under a heap of rubbish. The incident occurred at the Binaliw Landfill in Cebu City, where nearly 50 sanitation workers were caught in the collapse. Emergency services have managed to rescue 13 individuals, but many others are still missing and trapped under the debris.

Among those affected were landfill workers, and the search operation is ongoing to locate any remaining individuals. Unfortunately, one female worker lost her life during the rescue efforts, while the rest sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Witnesses described the sudden collapse of the garbage mountain, leaving destruction in its wake. Jaylord Antigua, an office worker at the landfill, recounted his harrowing experience of escaping from the rubble. Search and rescue teams are tirelessly working to find the 38 individuals who are still missing.

The local authorities have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety and provide support to the affected families. Images from the scene show the extensive damage caused by the collapse, with rescuers using heavy equipment to search for survivors.

The incident has highlighted the longstanding safety and health concerns associated with landfills and dumpsites in the Philippines, particularly in areas near impoverished communities. Efforts to improve waste management and close illegal dumpsites have been emphasized following past tragedies, such as the catastrophic event in Quezon City in 2000, which claimed the lives of over 200 people and led to significant legislative changes.
