In conversations with residents across various towns, the consensus appears to be a growing concern over the rising cost of living. This issue has been a personal priority for me, as I have been actively involved in advocating for more affordable infant formula and aiding families in avoiding predatory lending practices.
Having extensively traveled throughout the country last year, engaging with Iceland’s 30,000 employees and five million customers weekly, we compiled our insights into the ‘Iceland Manifesto,’ released before the previous year’s election. Feedback highlighted a sense of disconnect from policymakers and widespread struggles with the affordability of essentials like childcare, veterinary care, heating, and food. These persistent worries underscore the ongoing challenges faced by individuals, making the cost of living their paramount daily concern.
My appointment as a Labour peer is driven by a singular goal: to bring practical insights from the high street to Westminster, amplifying the voices of businesses and communities nationwide. Acknowledging the wealth of expertise in the House of Lords and the quality of its discussions, I am honored to contribute my experience as a retailer and entrepreneur. Leading a family business that provides thousands of jobs and offers millions access to affordable, high-quality food, I aim to offer a unique perspective and advocate for the needs of both businesses and families.
Understanding firsthand the obstacles encountered by businesses in meeting payroll obligations and the challenges faced by families in securing nutritious meals daily, I bring a firsthand entrepreneurial perspective to the table. The current Labour Government’s focus on fostering economic growth and removing hindrances to progress aligns with the belief that private enterprise, with the right support and regulatory framework, is essential for sustainable growth.
While I acknowledge that Westminster may not have all the solutions, I firmly believe that honest and informed input from individuals deeply involved in business is crucial for effective governance. In my new capacity, I am committed to maintaining this principle and speaking candidly on pertinent issues.
