“Labour MPs Vie for Deputy Leader, Bridget Phillipson Gains Momentum”

Six Labour MPs have entered the competition to succeed Angela Rayner as deputy leader, with Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson emerging as an early favorite by assuring no compromise on workers’ rights reforms. At the Trades Unions Congress conference, Phillipson emphasized her commitment to upholding the Employment Rights Bill championed by Rayner, addressing concerns of potential dilution. Presenting herself as a proud working-class woman, Phillipson affirmed her dedication to delivering on the promised reforms.

While Phillipson’s candidacy has gained momentum, there are concerns that she may be perceived as Downing Street’s preferred choice amidst calls from MPs for government attention on critical issues like a wealth tax and two-child benefit limit. The race also includes Labour MP Dame Emily Thornberry, Lucy Powell, Alison McGovern, Paula Barker, and Bell Ribeiro-Addy, all vying for the position. A virtual hustings is scheduled for Wednesday, with the candidates striving to secure at least 80 MP nominations by Thursday to advance to the members’ ballot.

Phillipson, with 44 nominations, pledges to challenge Reform and emphasizes her journey from humble beginnings to the Cabinet. Thornberry, with 7 nominations, highlights the need for learning from past mistakes and advocating for various concerns such as welfare and wealth tax. McGovern, with 2 nominations, stresses the importance of countering right-wing populism and delivering on electoral promises. Powell, with 35 nominations, emphasizes understanding people’s aspirations and fears in guiding party operations. Ribeiro-Addy, with 8 nominations, emphasizes the need to focus on Labour values rather than chasing Reform. Barker, with 3 nominations, underscores the importance of prioritizing public services and workers’ interests.
