Keir Starmer emphasized that Britain will never allow its flag to be used as a symbol of “violence, fear, and division.” The Prime Minister asserted that the flag represents the diversity of the nation and pledged to combat intimidation based on individuals’ backgrounds or skin color.
This statement followed a large nationalist demonstration, estimated to have drawn between 110,000 and 150,000 participants, led by far-right organizer Tommy Robinson. Tech mogul Elon Musk faced criticism for his remarks at the London event, where he warned of impending violence and urged people to either fight back or face dire consequences.
In response, Starmer reiterated the importance of peaceful protests, highlighting that while they are fundamental to the country’s values, any attacks on law enforcement or intimidation of individuals due to their identity will not be tolerated. He emphasized that Britain’s identity is rooted in tolerance, diversity, and respect, and the flag will not be relinquished to those who seek to exploit it for divisive purposes.
The Metropolitan Police reported that 24 individuals were arrested and 26 officers sustained injuries, with four being seriously harmed during the demonstration. Arrests were made for various offenses, including affray, violent disorder, assault, and criminal damage.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle condemned Musk’s comments, labeling them as inappropriate and incomprehensible. Despite the large turnout at the protest, Kyle underscored that a minority engaged in violent acts against the police and would be held accountable for their actions.
Kyle highlighted the need for efforts to bridge community divides, citing figures like Tommy Robinson who capitalize on societal grievances. He stressed the urgency for policymakers to address underlying concerns that have persisted since the financial crisis, emphasizing the importance of uniting communities in the face of issues like immigration.
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey criticized Musk for inciting violence and called for bipartisan condemnation of such reckless rhetoric. Davey emphasized the necessity for unity in standing against any attempts to undermine democracy.
