“Jersey Western Railway Plans Comeback After 9 Decades”

Trains may make a comeback to Jersey after nearly nine decades. The island’s railway system ceased operations in 1936 due to the success of Jersey’s bus network at that time.

Jersey Western Railway (JWR) is proposing to reintroduce trains to the island to offer affordable, comfortable, and eco-friendly transportation. The company urges the public to support the initiative by signing a petition to persuade the Infrastructure Minister, the sole authority capable of approving the railway’s return.

JWR aims to utilize the original Jersey Railway track bed for the new railway, including extensions to the Airport and Corbière, with special beach services planned for holidaymakers. The company promises convenient beach trains to transport visitors hassle-free.

The railway company plans to offer complimentary passes to senior citizens and individuals with medical or mobility challenges. JWR’s founder, Alexander Sparrow, mentioned that if endorsed, trains would operate every seven-and-a-half minutes, with a journey across the island priced at £4.90.

Historically, Jersey’s railway services commenced in 1870, connecting St Helier to St Aubin, followed by the Jersey Eastern Railway to Gorey Pier. Despite these early beginnings, the bus services eventually overshadowed the railways.

Located off the Normandy coast, Jersey is easily accessible from various UK airports, making it a popular destination for both short breaks and summer vacations. Despite being the largest Channel Island, Jersey is relatively small, measuring only 9 miles by five miles.

Jersey offers a range of activities beyond its railways, such as surfing lessons at Splash Surf School in St Ouen’s Bay and coasteering expeditions guided by Jersey Adventures along the picturesque coastline.

Tourists can also explore historical sites like the medieval Mont Orgueil Castle in Gorey and the 17th-century Elizabeth Castle in St Aubin’s Bay. Jersey’s rich history includes remnants of WWII German occupation visible in bunkers scattered across the island and the famous Jersey War Tunnels.
