A hiker who had been missing for five days without a phone or food was discovered alive and shared his fear of not surviving the ordeal. Roberto Farias Tomaz, 19, went missing while hiking towards Pico ParanĂ¡, the tallest mountain in southern Brazil, after getting separated from his friend on January 1. After trekking approximately 20km alone through the forest, he arrived at a farm in Cacatu, Antonina, where he borrowed a phone to contact his sister and inform her of his safety.
Following his rescue, Roberto, who had minimal supplies of food and water, was hospitalized for evaluation. During an interview with RPC, a TV Globo affiliate, he emotionally recounted his experience, expressing his belief that it was the end but relying on his family for strength. Despite thinking search efforts had ceased, he persevered, guided by faith and determination.
Medical assessments revealed abrasions but no serious injuries, and Roberto expressed gratitude towards the volunteers and professionals involved in his search. Reunited with his family in Pinhais, he thanked everyone for their support and prayers. The Governor of ParanĂ¡ commended the search teams for their diligent work, while the State Secretary of Public Security highlighted the collaborative effort that led to Roberto’s safe return.
