“Fodor’s ‘No List’ 2026: Canary Islands Warned”

In a surprising move, the renowned American travel guide producer Fodor unveiled their yearly ‘No List,’ advising against certain travel destinations for the year 2026. Among the places highlighted for overtourism issues was the popular Spanish archipelago, the Canary Islands. Despite being a favorite winter sun spot for Brits due to its pleasant climate, attracting nearly 18 million tourists last year, the Canaries made an unexpected appearance on the list of places to avoid.

Despite facing challenges like overtourism protests and airport delays, the Canary Islands continue to lure visitors with their warm weather, affordable living costs, and natural beauty. The recent crackdown on holiday lettings may have affected accommodation options and prices on the islands.

During a recent trip to Lanzarote in March, the writer experienced a surge in tourism firsthand. Booking a hotel became a challenge due to high demand, leading to inflated prices and limited options. However, they managed to secure a good deal at Caybeach Sun in Playa Blanca, offering quality amenities at a reasonable rate.

Local residents and sustainability advocates have voiced concerns about the negative impacts of overtourism on the Canaries. Issues such as increased traffic, rising rental prices, property values, and reported escalations in violent crimes have raised alarms about the sustainability of tourism on the islands.

Given the rising crowds and associated challenges, potential visitors are urged to consider alternative winter sun destinations like the Azores and Cape Verde if they prefer a quieter vacation. Despite the growing concerns, the unique landscapes, beautiful beaches, and warm hospitality of the Canary Islands continue to attract tourists, leaving travelers in a dilemma about revisiting in 2026.
