Elderly Couple Slashes Heating Costs with Innovative System

A couple in Braintree, Essex, Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, have successfully slashed their monthly heating costs to just £40 by participating in a new energy program trial. Instead of using a traditional gas boiler, they now utilize a cutting-edge system consisting of over 500 computer banks housed in their shed. This innovative setup generates heat that is then channeled into their hot water system, significantly reducing their heating expenses from £375 to a range of £40 to £70 per month.

Mr. Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed his relief at no longer worrying about heating costs and the comfort it brings, especially for his wife, who suffers from spinal stenosis. The couple had the data center installed in December 2024, as part of the HeatHub project developed by Thermify under the UK Power Networks’ SHIELD initiative aimed at assisting low-income households to transition towards sustainability.

The technology, including the Thermify Heat Hub, not only enhances living conditions but also contributes to achieving energy efficiency targets. Daniel Greenwood from Eastlight Community Homes commended the project’s positive impact on reducing carbon emissions and lowering heating expenses. With promising results from the Bridges’ trial, plans are underway to expand the initiative to 50 more households in the next project phase.

The aim of the SHIELD program, led by UK Power Networks, is to ensure that vulnerable households can access and benefit from eco-friendly solutions. Supported by the Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund, the project seeks to scale up to 100,000 units annually by 2030, aligning with the UK’s commitment to a sustainable future.
