Visitors attending a beloved city’s annual Yuletide celebration have expressed their disappointment on social media regarding the lack of festive ambiance, high prices, and overcrowding. One dissatisfied attendee went as far as calling it the ‘worst Christmas market I’ve ever visited.’
The Bath Christmas Market, currently ongoing in the heart of the historic city until December 14, is commemorating its 25th anniversary this year. The market, described on its official website as a charming festive event, invites guests to explore Bath’s enchanting city center adorned with sparkling chalets, unique gifts, and delectable food and drinks to delight the senses, creating a cherished Christmas tradition.
Recognized for its Georgian architecture, the city’s market was recently voted the best Christmas Market in the UK by Which?, a leading consumer association. Which? lauded Bath for its exceptional food and drink options, cultural attractions, and the festive addition of over 200 chalets in celebration of the market’s milestone anniversary.
The market also received praise for featuring locally sourced produce from artisan stalls operated by traders from Bristol and the South West of England. Visitors are encouraged to explore the towering Bath Abbey and the ancient Roman Baths as part of their market experience.
While many have enjoyed their time at the market, some TikTok users have expressed disappointment with their visits. One user criticized the market for lacking a true Christmas feel, noting the absence of Christmas music and a festive atmosphere, as well as mediocre customer service.
Another TikTok user shared a video titled “Bath Christmas Market is a hellscape,” highlighting the overcrowding issue. Local residents have also voiced concerns about the market’s impact on daily life, with complaints ranging from increased congestion to tourists disrupting their routines.
Despite mixed reviews, some visitors have had positive experiences at the market. One user described a pleasant visit, mentioning the peaceful early morning atmosphere, diverse stalls, and enjoyable street food offerings.
In response to the criticisms, Councillor Manda Rigby emphasized the market’s success, job creation, and support for local businesses, countering negative social media comments with positive testimonials from satisfied stallholders and visitors.
