“Device Overload Slowing Broadband Speeds in UK Homes”

If you’re experiencing slow broadband speeds, the culprit might be the number of devices connected to your router. Recent findings suggest that the average UK household has around 16 internet-enabled gadgets spread throughout their property.

Certain devices like video doorbells are constantly online, transmitting data and potentially causing delays in activities such as video calls or streaming services like Netflix, especially for homes with basic internet connections.

Think of broadband like a road – the more traffic it handles, the slower it becomes. Properties with full-fibre broadband have wider “roads” that can accommodate increased traffic, unlike older copper cables that struggle to keep up.

Another issue is the presence of ‘phantom’ devices, which remain connected to the router even when not in use. These devices continuously communicate with the router, consuming bandwidth unnecessarily.

To enhance connectivity, consider upgrading to faster full-fibre speeds if your home is filled with smart devices. Additionally, identify and disconnect any unused devices to free up bandwidth and improve speed instantly.

Max Beckett, a broadband expert from Uswitch, highlighted the importance of managing connected devices to prevent connection issues caused by unused gadgets constantly communicating with the router in the background.

Performing a digital spring clean by disconnecting unused devices and limiting high-definition video streaming can significantly improve your broadband experience, even without a full-fibre connection.
