Investigations have commenced into eight companies amid worries about their online pricing strategies, with an additional 100 businesses expected to receive cautionary notices.
The firms under scrutiny include StubHub, Viagogo, AA Driving School, BSM Driving School, Gold’s Gym, Wayfair, Appliances Direct, and Marks Electrical.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is focusing on how fees are displayed online, potential deceptive time-limited offers, and the automatic enrollment of customers for optional charges.
StubHub and Viagogo, popular secondary ticket selling platforms, are facing investigations related to additional charges imposed on ticket purchases. AA Driving School and BSM Driving School are being probed for fee transparency on their websites, particularly in terms of upfront disclosure during the checkout process.
Gold’s Gym is being investigated for its handling of a one-time joining fee for annual memberships, specifically regarding the timing of its introduction during the sign-up process. Wayfair is under scrutiny for time-limited sales, Marks Electrical for default opt-ins, and Appliances Direct for their utilization of time-limited sales and default opt-ins.
The CMA has indicated that these companies are being investigated due to suspected violations of consumer protection laws, emphasizing that no final decisions have been reached. These cases mark the first instances of consumer protection powers being employed by the regulatory body, which is also reaching out to 100 other businesses regarding concerns over additional fees and sales tactics.
Sarah Cardell, the CEO of the CMA, highlighted the importance of ensuring transparency in online shopping to protect consumers from misleading prices and pressure selling tactics. She emphasized the watchdog’s commitment to cracking down on illegal conduct and safeguarding consumer interests.
In response to the investigations, an AA Driving School representative affirmed the transparency of their booking fee and willingness to enhance customer notifications. A Viagogo spokesperson stated their cooperation with the CMA’s investigation.
The Mirror has reached out to Gold’s Gym, Wayfair, Marks Electrical, and Appliances Direct for comments. BSM Driving School is affiliated with the AA, while Viagogo and StubHub share the same parent company.
