Judy Parfitt, renowned for her role as Sister Monica Joan in the long-running BBC One series “Call the Midwife,” has shared her thoughts as the show gears up for a hiatus. The 90-year-old actress has portrayed the wise and quirky character since the show’s inception in January 2012, captivating audiences with Sister Monica Joan’s love for cake and compassionate nature towards those in need.

Sister Monica Joan, a devoted figure to the community of East London’s Poplar, has led a life dedicated to religious service, midwifery, and aiding the less privileged. Despite her noble endeavors, her family never fully accepted her choices, causing strife within her personal life.

The upcoming season of “Call the Midwife,” set in 1971, delves into significant themes like the Women’s Liberation movement, premature births, and cancer diagnoses. The show’s journey into the 1970s continues with the confirmation of its 16th series, along with plans for a wartime prequel set in Poplar during World War II.

Additionally, a spin-off movie set in 1972 is on the horizon as the main series goes on hold to accommodate the prequel and film projects. Judy Parfitt, reflecting on her 15-year portrayal of Sister Monica Joan, expressed her attachment to the character and the challenges of not filming during the usual season timeframe.

In an interview with Radio Times, Judy shared her affection for the character, stating her admiration for the quirky and endearing traits of Sister Monica Joan. As viewers eagerly anticipate the return of the show, the Christmas special hinted at the challenges awaiting the characters, including a crisis at the order’s branch house in Hong Kong.

Despite the setbacks, Sister Monica Joan remains a pivotal figure in the series, expected to resume her duties alongside the dedicated team at Nonnatus House. Fans can catch the latest season of “Call the Midwife” starting on Sunday, January 11, airing on BBC One and iPlayer.
