The owner of a bar in Switzerland where a fire tragedy claimed the lives of 40 individuals was reportedly spotted leaving the premises with a cash register filled with money. Jessica Moretti, aged 40, allegedly disregarded the warnings of patrons and absconded with cash as the fire engulfed the Le Constellation bar in the town of Crans-Montana. Alongside her husband Jacques Moretti, 49, who is a co-owner of the establishment, Jessica is currently under scrutiny by Swiss authorities.
They are confronting accusations of negligence leading to bodily harm, negligent homicide, and negligent arson. Furthermore, Jessica, a French citizen, may potentially face additional charges for failing to aid individuals in distress. Multiple media sources have indicated that several casualties occurred as the fire rapidly spread within the venue during a New Year’s celebration.
Eyewitnesses claim that Jessica fled while trapped patrons were pleading for help. CCTV footage allegedly captured her leaving the scene with the cash register, which contained the proceeds from the evening. Reports from Italian media outlet La Repubblica suggested that Jessica prioritized securing the cash register with the day’s earnings during her escape.
The tragic incident at the bar marked one of the deadliest fires in Swiss history, prompting tributes to be paid to the victims. The fire, believed to have been ignited by the proximity of candle sparklers to the ceiling, resulted in severe injuries to 119 individuals, with the fatalities ranging from 14 to 39 years of age.
One of the deceased, Charlotte Niddam, had received her education in Britain. Grieving families have lodged a formal complaint with the Swiss prosecutor’s office, supported by Geneva-based lawyer Romain Jordan, who confirmed the acceptance of the filed complaints by the authorities.
Following the devastating event, allegations emerged that the Morettis had obstructed social media accounts linked to the bar. Lawyer Romain Jordan mentioned that the bar deactivated its social media profiles during the rescue efforts.
Authorities have initiated an inquiry into the renovations conducted at the venue in 2015, prompted by concerns over inadequate safety measures. Additionally, investigations will focus on the accessibility and functionality of fire extinguishers and exits within the premises.
