“Aldi Regains Crown: Most Economical UK Supermarket”

Aldi has reclaimed its title as the most economical supermarket in the UK. According to a recent study by consumer group Which?, a basket of 70 essential items at Aldi averaged £121.22 last month, edging out Lidl by £1.13. Tesco, although slightly pricier, offered savings for Clubcard members at an average of £133.65 compared to £136.20.

In contrast, Waitrose emerged as the priciest option, averaging £166.79 for the same items. Opting for either Aldi or Waitrose for a full shopping list could result in savings exceeding £45.

The monthly comparison by Which? evaluates the pricing of eight supermarket chains across a selection of groceries, including both own-label and popular brand products.

A larger list of 183 groceries, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their focus on fewer branded items, indicated that Asda offered the best value at £455.52 on average last month. Asda’s commitment to reducing prices to compete with rivals, particularly discounters, was evident in this analysis.

For a larger shopping list, Asda remained the most cost-effective at £455.52, whereas Waitrose was the priciest at £522.91, making it £67.39 more expensive than Asda. In a similar comparison of a smaller list of items, Waitrose also stood out as the most expensive, averaging £166.79. Reena Sewraz, Which? retail editor, noted the ongoing competition between discounters like Aldi and Lidl, emphasizing the importance of comparing prices across supermarkets to maximize savings, especially with the approaching holiday season.

The study findings suggest that choosing the right supermarket could lead to savings of up to 27%. The data presented a breakdown of costs for the 70 items and 183 items across various supermarket chains, highlighting the competitive pricing landscape in the UK grocery sector.
