“Reform UK Councils Under Fire for Failing on Pothole Repairs”

Reform UK has faced criticism for its handling of road maintenance issues, with recent analysis indicating that Councils under Reform leadership have been the least successful in addressing pothole repairs. The Government’s introduction of a new traffic light system to address potholes has revealed that a significant number of Local Highway Authorities led by Reform have received a ‘Red’ rating, signifying poor performance. The Department for Transport has implemented a mapping tool to assess 154 local highway authorities based on road conditions and the efficiency of their use of government funding for road maintenance.

Among the Reform Councils assessed, including Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and West Northamptonshire, three have received the lowest ‘Red’ rating out of a total of 12 Reform-led Councils. Similarly, Conservative Councils have also struggled with pothole repairs, with nearly 20% of their Councils receiving a ‘Red’ rating.

Anna Turley MP, Chair of the Labour Party, commented on the findings, stating that Reform Councils have performed poorly in addressing pothole issues. She emphasized the Labour Party’s commitment to investing significantly in fixing potholes and improving road conditions for motorists.

The assessment data, collected before Reform took control of local authorities, identified several areas, including Cumberland, Cumbria; Bolton, Greater Manchester; Leicestershire; Suffolk; and Kensington and Chelsea, as needing improvement. The Department for Transport announced a dedicated support program to assist these ‘Red’ authorities in aligning with best practices through a £300,000 initiative.

Conversely, authorities such as Essex, Wiltshire, Coventry, Leeds, and Darlington were categorized as ‘Green,’ indicating more effective management of road maintenance. The Government has pledged £7.3 billion for local road maintenance funding over four years, demonstrating its commitment to improving road conditions nationwide.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted the government’s efforts to address road maintenance issues and reduce the financial burden on drivers caused by poor road conditions. She emphasized the significant investment in road repairs to enhance road safety and promote community pride.

In response, a spokesman for Reform UK defended their record, attributing the poor road conditions to previous Conservative and Labour councils. They highlighted their efforts to address the backlog of potholes, particularly in Derbyshire, and expressed a commitment to improving the state of local highways under their administration.
