Coco Gauff has hinted at the possibility of addressing the incident where she was recorded smashing her racket post her elimination from the Australian Open. The third-seeded player suffered a decisive 6-1, 6-2 loss to Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals, leading her to find a secluded area off the court to express her frustration.
Despite her attempt to keep the moment private, the footage of Gauff damaging her racket was captured on camera and quickly circulated online and on TV. Gauff raised concerns about the diminishing privacy for players at major tournaments, referencing a similar situation involving Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open final.
Expressing her disappointment, Gauff mentioned her intention to release her emotions in private, unaware that cameras were present. She hoped for more privacy in such situations in the future, emphasizing the limited private space players have, mainly in the locker room.
Acknowledging the attention the incident garnered, Gauff admitted that venting her frustrations privately helped her cope with the defeat without taking it out on her team. She highlighted the importance of releasing emotions constructively to avoid affecting those around her negatively.
Despite her reputation for resilience, Gauff struggled to recover after Svitolina gained an early advantage, leading to her inability to elevate her performance. Reflecting on the match, Gauff attributed her subpar performance to Svitolina’s strategic play and acknowledged that some days are tougher due to the opponent’s performance.
