Reflecting on his upbringing in Folkestone, Sir Roger highlighted the lack of recreational options during his teenage years, describing the town as grim. Witnessing the decline of Folkestone, he decided to invest in its transformation.

Under Sir Roger’s guidance, Folkestone has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis. The town’s Creative Quarter now stands as a symbol of its evolution into a trendy tourist destination, hosting 80 independent businesses that attract visitors from various parts of the world, including East Asia and Londoners seeking a more serene lifestyle by the coast.

The philanthropist’s vision has not only rejuvenated the town’s economy but also preserved its heritage. Sir Roger’s strategic investments, including acquiring neglected properties and granting long-term leases to his arts charity, have paved the way for sustainable growth. Additionally, significant enhancements in education and sports facilities have further enhanced Folkestone’s appeal.

Looking ahead, the town’s redevelopment plans include the construction of tower blocks at the harbor, accommodating residential units and commercial spaces. While some residents express concerns about potential downsides of the transformation, Sir Roger reassures them that Folkestone will maintain its unique identity and not emulate other locales like Brighton.

Despite the mixed sentiments among locals regarding the town’s evolution, Folkestone’s property market has experienced a surge, with average house prices surpassing the UK national average. This growth, though beneficial for the town’s infrastructure, has raised challenges such as rising rents and property values, impacting long-time residents.

As Folkestone continues its journey of renewal, balancing progress with preserving its heritage remains a key priority.
