An expert from British Gas has shared tips on how to address cold spots in your radiator, with a simple tool costing only 97p.
If your radiator shows cold spots, especially at the top, or emits gurgling sounds while heating up slowly, it may need bleeding, a straightforward fix that requires the right equipment.
To carry out this task, you will need a radiator key, available for purchase for as low as 97p at Screwfix, to release any trapped air in the system.
Before commencing the bleeding process, Peter Knowles, a technical repair engineer at British Gas, advises turning off the heating system.
Ensure that the radiator has cooled down completely before starting to prevent any risk of scalding from hot water.
Prepare an old towel and a container to catch the water that will be released. Once ready, locate the small valve on the radiator and use the key to turn it anti-clockwise.

Peter advises, “Turn the valve slightly until you hear a hissing sound, indicating the release of trapped air. Once water starts to flow, catch it in your container, then tighten the valve and proceed to the next radiator.”
Avoid over-tightening the valve to prevent a drop in boiler pressure. If issues persist, Peter suggests seeking assistance from a gas safe registered engineer.
