January is proving to be a critical month for Prince Harry, particularly concerning an important issue he is facing. Following his unsuccessful legal attempt to reinstate his automatic police protection while in the UK, the Home Office has reportedly initiated a comprehensive threat assessment for the first time since 2020.
The review’s results are anticipated this month, with sources close to the Duke of Sussex expressing confidence that his protection could be reinstated. Currently, Harry is required to notify the Metropolitan Police a month in advance of any UK travel, with security arrangements evaluated on a case-by-case basis. His legal team has argued that this approach has jeopardized his safety.
Speculation has arisen that if the situation changes, Harry could potentially spend more time in the UK and assist the dwindling number of working royals with official engagements on behalf of the monarchy.
However, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond is skeptical. She believes that Prince William, Harry’s older estranged brother, would prefer Harry to stay away from royal duties. Bond expressed doubt that Harry would resume royal responsibilities, emphasizing the decision that one cannot be partially committed to royal duties.
In October, it was revealed that a known stalker of Harry came dangerously close to him during a visit to the UK in September. The stalker was found hiding in a London hotel shortly before Harry was scheduled to arrive for an event.
Bond believes that an imminent security decision in Harry’s favor would be a validation of his efforts. She emphasized that the threat level facing Harry has not diminished, considering his royal status, military background, and family situation, making him a potential target.
Amid his security dispute, Harry has highlighted the challenges of bringing his family, including his wife Meghan and their children Archie and Lilibet, back to the UK safely. The strained relationship with his father, the King, has been exacerbated by the security concerns, leading to limited visits between Harry’s children and the King.
If Harry regains his automatic security, there is optimism that he may reunite his children with their UK heritage. Despite potential obstacles, including Meghan’s reluctance to visit the UK, many would welcome the reunion between Harry, his children, and their grandfather.
