The individual known as the ‘hero of Bondi Beach’ has requested global support as his health deteriorated while in New York. He is currently in the US for medical treatment following gunshot wounds sustained during a heroic intervention at Bondi Beach in December. His brave actions, captured on camera and shared widely, have garnered worldwide attention.
In a recent Instagram video, the visibly unwell Mr. al-Ahmed was seen resting in a hotel bed surrounded by well-wishers. He shared that his health had worsened, leading to the cancellation of appointments due to sudden hand swelling and severe pain, necessitating three surgeries.
Despite the challenges, he expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and encouragement, stating that thoughts of protecting innocent lives and the support from many uplift his spirits during moments of pain.
The Sydney resident is receiving specialized care in the US after being shot multiple times during the December 14 attack that claimed 15 lives. Naveed Akram, one of the perpetrators, faces numerous charges, including murder. Mr. al-Ahmed also extended appreciation to those who visited him during his health struggles despite the cancellations.
Following meetings with prominent figures like former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Mr. al-Ahmed visited the US Congress and engaged with American officials. Mr. Rudd commended his extraordinary bravery that resonated globally, praising him for his courageous act.
In the aftermath of the tragic incident, Mr. al-Ahmed has been hailed by Australian leaders, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW premier Chris Minns, who visited him in the hospital. Both leaders lauded him as a true national hero.
