“UK Parliament to Vote on Troop Deployment in Ukraine”

Keir Starmer has assured that Members of Parliament will have a say through a vote before any military deployment to Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The commitment was made by the Prime Minister in the House of Commons following a joint declaration signed in Paris by the UK, France, and Ukraine’s wartime leader Volodymr Zelensky. The agreement allows for the possibility of boots on the ground after a ceasefire. Starmer disclosed that Britain and France plan to establish military hubs on Ukrainian territory and set up secure facilities for weapons and military equipment to assist Kyiv in its defense.

During today’s Prime Minister’s Questions session, Starmer emphasized that any potential deployment of British troops to the region would be subject to a parliamentary vote. He outlined that a legal framework would be necessary for any deployment, which would occur post-ceasefire to enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, conduct deterrent operations, and establish and safeguard military hubs. He confirmed that a formal statement would be presented to the House at the earliest opportunity.

Responding to queries from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch about the number of troops that would be part of a peacekeeping force in Ukraine, Starmer reiterated that troop deployment would only happen after a ceasefire, to support Ukraine, conduct deterrence operations, and establish protected military facilities. The exact troop numbers would be determined based on military plans being developed, with details to be shared with Parliament prior to any deployment.

Starmer stressed that if a “legal instrument” was required for deployment, a debate and vote in the Commons would be held. Speaking in Paris, he underscored the importance of international unity for peace efforts and highlighted the need for Putin to abandon aggression for a lasting peace. Starmer condemned recent attacks by Russian forces on Ukraine, emphasizing the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution while acknowledging the challenges ahead.
