EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have reported that EE customers are receiving urgent messages threatening the loss of thousands of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.
Bitdefender issued a warning on Instagram advising users to be wary of messages claiming imminent expiration of EE reward points. Scammers are exploiting the popularity of the EE network by sending deceptive texts with malicious links that lead to fake websites aiming to steal login credentials for fraudulent purposes.
The success of this scam hinges on creating a sense of urgency to prompt users to act impulsively. Bitdefender highlighted the manipulation tactic employed by scammers, emphasizing that authentic EE notifications will be found within official EE accounts, not in unsolicited texts.
Previous instances of this scam targeting EE customers have been reported earlier this year. Users have recounted falling for fake messages about reward points, with some unknowingly providing personal information on bogus websites resembling genuine EE platforms.
EE has clarified that it does not administer a points program and has shared examples of scam messages to raise awareness among users. The company advises recipients of suspicious texts to forward them to 7726 for investigation and to refrain from clicking on unknown links, replying to dubious messages, or sharing personal details.
In light of these developments, EE users are urged to exercise caution and vigilance when dealing with unsolicited messages and to follow the company’s guidelines to avoid falling victim to scams.
