“Lidl Named Most Budget-Friendly Supermarket Again”

Lidl has been named the most budget-friendly supermarket by Which? for the second time in recent months, surpassing Aldi in the rankings.

In October, a list of 70 items at Lidl averaged £120.46, or £120.38 for members of its loyalty program, Lidl Plus. In comparison, an identical basket of goods at Aldi averaged £121.

Despite Aldi’s dominance as the cheapest supermarket in 22 out of the last 24 months, Lidl’s recent victory highlights its competitive pricing. The basket of 70 items included both branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For Tesco shoppers, the same items would have cost £134.89 last month, or £133.38 with a Clubcard. Meanwhile, the total bill at Sainsbury’s was £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card.

Which? also conducted a price comparison for a larger list of 187 items, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their smaller product ranges compared to other supermarkets.

Asda emerged as the most economical choice for a larger shopping list, priced at £469.11. The same items would have cost £476.11 for Tesco Clubcard holders and £481.34 at Morrisons with a More loyalty card.

In contrast, Waitrose ranked as the priciest option for both smaller and larger shopping lists in October.

The analysis by Which? factored in special offer prices and loyalty program discounts, excluding multibuy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, remarked on Lidl’s affordability, emphasizing the importance of shopping around to save money, especially with rising food prices ahead of the holiday season. Choosing a different supermarket could potentially lead to savings of up to 26%.
