Eland Cables, a company specializing in supplying electrical cables for major infrastructure projects, has taken the initiative to implement a pay raise for its employees earlier than scheduled. The move has been welcomed by the staff, who believe the extra income will be beneficial as the holiday season approaches.
The Real Living Wage, which is a voluntary wage standard for employees over 18 years old, is designed to cover essential living costs such as food, clothing, and household expenses. Eland Cables has increased the hourly rate by 85p to £13.45 per hour, representing a 6.7% raise, and by 95p to £14.80 per hour in London, a 6.9% increase, surpassing the minimum wage requirements.
This pay raise applies to all employees over 18 working for a Real Living Wage-accredited employer, of which there are now more than 16,000. While the deadline for employers to implement the higher rates is May 2026, Eland Cables has acted ahead of schedule.
Ben, a 34-year-old father of two from Doncaster and a long-term employee at Eland Cables, expressed his appreciation for the early wage increase, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on his family’s finances, especially with Christmas approaching. The company’s executive director, JS Pelland, highlighted that the decision to adopt the new wage standard early is rooted in principles of fairness, loyalty, and sustainable success.
Pelland emphasized that fair compensation is essential to employee engagement and productivity, leading to improved outcomes for both the employees and the company. Eland Cables has seen positive results from its approach, with high staff retention rates, reduced absenteeism, and increased productivity over the years.
Furthermore, the company’s focus on internal promotion and career development has created a culture of commitment and growth among its workforce. Pelland noted that fostering a sense of belonging and purpose among employees has been instrumental in maintaining consistency, quality, and trust within the organization.
