“Wetherspoons: More Than Pubs – A Surprising Hotel Experience”

Love it or hate it, Wetherspoons, commonly known as “Spoons,” is a well-established British brand. With approximately 800 locations across the UK, the chain generated £2 billion in revenue last year. From its distinct 70s-themed carpets to its affordable drinks, outspoken CEO Tim Martin, and knack for transforming historic Victorian buildings into popular drinking spots, Wetherspoons has become ingrained in British culture.

While many are familiar with Wetherspoons’ pubs, what may come as a surprise is that the company has been operating hotels since 1998. The first Wetherspoons hotel, located in Shrewsbury, offered 22 guest rooms alongside its bar and restaurant. Since then, 54 additional Wetherspoons Hotels have been established.

Despite reservations about Tim Martin’s political involvement and concerns about competition with independent pubs due to its purchasing power, a recent accolade piqued my interest. Which? named Wetherspoons the most budget-friendly hotel in the UK, prompting me to give it a try.

On a chilly November day, after a long bike ride, I arrived at the Thomas Ingoldsby hotel in Canterbury. What I encountered there completely altered my perception of Wetherspoons.

The value proposition at Wetherspoons hotels is remarkable. In the Which? survey, only two hotels received a 4-star rating for value for money, with Wetherspoons being one of them. While the average rate at Coaching Inn Group was £128 per night, Wetherspoons charged an average of just £70, with a double room at the Thomas Ingoldsby priced at £55.

I indulged in a £2.99 vegetarian breakfast and enjoyed £1.89 pints of ale, both of which were surprisingly good. The affordability of these offerings stood out, especially in a time where every expense seems inflated.

Compared to my previous visit to a Wetherspoons pub in London, the atmosphere at the Canterbury hotel was lively and diverse. The hotel rooms, conveniently located near the pub, were well-maintained and spacious, offering a comfortable stay.

Each room at the Ingoldsby featured a large desk, a stocked tea tray, a sizable TV, and a picturesque view of Canterbury Cathedral. The hotel staff mentioned that room 110 boasts the best view, overlooking the cathedral, while rooms on the other side may experience noise from morning traffic.

After a day of cycling, the ability to adjust the room temperature to a cozy 25°C was a welcomed feature. Although an all-inclusive package was not available, the hotel provided decent amenities like Wi-Fi, snacks, fresh towels, and a variety of hot beverages.

A wise observation from a friend’s father highlighted the significance of Wetherspoons as a social hub in the UK. With the decline of other meeting places, Wetherspoons remains a popular choice for people from various backgrounds. The addition of quality yet affordable hotel rooms further enhances its appeal as a versatile social space.
