“Escape to Tenerife: Your Winter Sun Getaway Awaits”

Britons seeking a getaway to enjoy the winter sun can find it closer to home than expected. The Canary Islands, typically a hot spot in the summer, still offer pleasant weather during the winter months, along with some delightful festive activities.

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is just a four-hour flight away from the UK. In December, temperatures range from 20 to 24 degrees Celsius, providing a welcome escape from the gloomy British climate. While sunbathing might not be ideal, it’s perfect for leisurely walks or relaxing with a drink outdoors.

Although the weather may not feel very Christmas-like, Tenerife embraces the festive spirit. The San Cristobal de La Laguna Christmas Market, running from December 10th to New Year’s Eve, offers a variety of artisan stalls showcasing local crafts such as volcanic stone creations, banana fiber products, and traditional Canarian embroidery.

Visitors to the market can also find unique Christmas decorations like “belenes,” nativity scenes reflecting the island’s stunning landscape elements. Situated in the UNESCO-recognized town center with its charming streets, the market is surrounded by affordable eateries serving classic Canarian dishes such as “bienmesabe” (an almond dessert), “papas arrugadas” with mojo sauce, and festive waffle ice cream.

For those interested in traveling to Tenerife, several airlines offer direct flights, including Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, and British Airways. Alternatively, for a different festive experience, Marella Cruises provide cruise options that include a stop in the Canary Islands.

Chris Hackney, CEO of Marella Cruises, notes that Tenerife is increasingly becoming a top choice for winter sun seekers, especially around Christmas. The island has seen a significant rise in popularity, with longer stays and cruise options attracting more visitors looking to enjoy the sunny Canarian weather during the holiday season.

However, travelers should be cautious around December 28th, as it is akin to April Fools Day on the island, with newspapers and locals engaging in pranks. So, it’s wise to take things with a pinch of salt and approach any news or information with caution during this time.
