Sky Q, known for its exceptional features, is a highly acclaimed set-top box in the market. This award-winning device is lauded for its capability to record live TV, access premium channels, on-demand content, and popular streaming apps like Disney+ and Netflix. Despite its widespread popularity, Sky seems to be transitioning away from its satellite-based platform towards internet-focused products such as the Sky Stream box and Sky Glass TV. This shift may pave the way for a new competitor to enter the scene for those who prefer physical recordings.
Humax has introduced a new product named the Aura EZ 4K TV Recorder, which shares many similarities with Sky Q. Equipped with a built-in 2TB hard drive like Sky’s flagship model, it can store extensive hours of TV programs, movies, and sports events. In a time where physical recording options are diminishing, a device with internal storage like this is a significant release.
The Aura EZ isn’t limited to aerial recordings; it is also Freely-powered, allowing users to watch live TV over broadband. Developed by the creators of Freeview, Freely offers over 60 live channels and a vast library of on-demand content. This setup facilitates easy mobility of the box across rooms, simple installation, and regular feature enhancements.
Offering 4K HDR picture quality, Dolby Digital Plus audio, and an integrated TV guide displaying current and upcoming programs, the Aura EZ also enables remote control via the Humax Aura EZ smartphone app. Users can conveniently browse schedules and manage recordings remotely.
Although Freely lacks the premium sports and movie offerings of Sky, it is a free-to-use service without any subscription charges.
The Humax Aura EZ is scheduled to launch in the UK in February 2026 with a suggested retail price of £249.
In parallel developments, Sky has announced its own upgrade, introducing a new subscription bundle combining major streaming services at a reduced monthly cost. Priced at £24 per month, customers gain access to Disney+, Netflix, Hayu, and the upcoming HBO Max. Sky emphasizes the value of this bundle, consolidating multiple streaming platforms under a single subscription. Subscribers to the Ultimate TV plan will also enjoy over 130 premium channels, including Sky Comedy, Sky Documentaries, Sky Crime, and Sky History.
Moreover, Sky Cinema customers will benefit from a new Disney movie channel directly integrated into the TV guide.
The £24 bundle encompasses:
– Netflix Standard with Ads
– Disney+ Standard with Ads (effective from March)
– HBO Max Basic with Ads (beginning March 26)
– Hayu (available from July, with selected content accessible from March)
– Over 130 Sky channels
