One out of every five individuals have observed significant illegal fly tipping in their localities, according to recent somber polling results.
Government officials have been cautioned that this pattern poses a risk of transforming the UK into an “environmental wild west”. The survey findings emerged following a massive pile of waste being unlawfully dumped in Oxfordshire, sparking outrage last month.
The scattered debris spanned approximately 150 meters, prompting demands for a dedicated fly-tipping hotline and increased enforcement by the National Crime Agency (NCA). When surveyed, 20% of respondents confirmed witnessing similar large-scale fly tipping incidents.
Among those individuals, a majority (63%) noted a worsening trend over the past year. Tim Farron, the spokesperson for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs from the Liberal Democrats, remarked, “These statistics reveal that the appalling heap of garbage in Oxfordshire is just the beginning.”
He added, “From our waterways to our countryside lanes, criminal syndicates are converting this nation into an environmental lawless zone.” The Environment Agency approximates that around 10,000 tonnes of waste were illicitly disposed of near Kidlington, with ongoing efforts to clean up the site.
A significant portion of the public, two-thirds, believe that organized criminal groups are responsible for the surge in illegal dumping sites. The survey, conducted by Savanta, involved interviews with 2,297 adults in the UK.
A representative from the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs stated, “Waste-related crimes severely impact local communities. We are collaborating across governmental sectors to eradicate unlawful waste practices nationwide and hold perpetrators accountable.”
The representative continued, “We are actively supporting the Environment Agency to combat the exploitation of our waste management system, bolstering their enforcement capabilities with more personnel and a 50% increase in funding to combat waste-related crimes, and imposing stricter penalties on offenders.”
Additionally, a spokesperson from the Labour Party informed The Mirror, “The previous Tory administration allowed waste criminal groups to operate unchecked, with reported incidents escalating by 20% during their final five years in power.”
The spokesperson emphasized, “Communities have been left to manage the aftermath of the Tory government’s inaction.” The Labour Party is taking a strong stance against illegal waste dumping, utilizing drones and mobile CCTV cameras to identify vehicles linked to fly-tipping, and empowering local councils to impound and destroy seized vehicles.
