“Care leavers to receive free healthcare services until age 25”

Young people leaving care will now benefit from free prescriptions, dental, and eyecare services until they reach the age of 25, as announced by Wes Streeting. The Health Secretary highlighted that these measures aim to support individuals in care who face significant health disparities from a young age. The reforms include alerting family doctors to children in foster care or children’s homes to ensure comprehensive care and prevent any oversight.

A new three-year pilot scheme will focus on improving access to mental health support for care leavers. Additionally, the government plans to introduce a program offering paid internships in the NHS and a guaranteed interview scheme for health service roles for these individuals. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) estimated that tens of thousands of care leavers will benefit from these services until the age of 25, with over 50,000 care leavers aged between 17 and 21 in 2025.

DHSC emphasized that young people leaving care often lack support after turning 18, leading to a higher risk of mental health issues and barriers to accessing healthcare services. Many are not adequately guided on how to register with a GP or dentist, and they also face increased chances of experiencing homelessness or unemployment. The recommendations put forth by children’s minister Josh MacAlister aim to address these disparities and improve the life chances of children and care leavers. MacAlister highlighted the government’s commitment to reducing health inequalities and providing essential support to vulnerable individuals.

Wes Streeting expressed his pride in the government’s efforts to break down barriers hindering care leavers from achieving their full potential. He emphasized the importance of ensuring all children have the best start in life, with a focus on enhancing healthcare and career opportunities for those leaving care. This initiative is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for care leavers to thrive and succeed.
