Government Plans Ticket Resale Ban to Thwart Scalpers

The Government is poised to introduce a ban on the resale of tickets for live events at inflated prices. This initiative aims to combat scalpers and secondary ticketing platforms that offer tickets for sale well above their original face value.

The Labour manifesto had pledged to enhance consumer protections to prevent individuals from falling victim to scams or being priced out of events by scalpers who use automated bots to purchase tickets in bulk as soon as they are released. These tickets are then resold at exorbitant markups on secondary ticketing websites.

While there were discussions about setting a cap on resale prices at up to 30% above the face value of a ticket, recent reports from the Guardian and Financial Times suggest that the Government is leaning towards capping prices at the face value itself, with the possibility of additional fees on top of that.

The Government has refrained from commenting on these reports, but speculations suggest that the announcement could come as early as Wednesday. This move comes following a joint effort by prominent music artists like Coldplay, Dua Lipa, and Radiohead, who have been urging the Government to fulfill its promise of limiting ticket resale prices.

Renowned artists such as The Cure’s Robert Smith, New Order, Iron Maiden, and others have also joined the cause, advocating for a price cap to restore confidence in the ticketing system and promote wider public access to the arts. Various industry stakeholders, including Which?, FanFair Alliance, and O2, have supported this initiative, emphasizing the need to combat professional scalpers and ensure fair ticket distribution.

Live Nation Entertainment, the parent company of Ticketmaster, has endorsed the Government’s proposal to prohibit ticket resale above face value. They highlight the importance of maintaining affordable access to live events and commend the UK’s stance on prioritizing fans’ interests.

On the contrary, StubHub has expressed concerns that imposing price caps may inadvertently drive ticket transactions to unregulated black markets, potentially exposing consumers to risks such as fraud and lack of recourse. Similarly, Viagogo has cited instances from other countries where price caps led to increased fraud rates, cautioning against potential negative consequences.

Overall, the push for a price cap on ticket resale reflects a broader effort to safeguard consumer interests, promote fair ticketing practices, and ensure equitable access to live events.
